My Favorite Rocking Chair

My Favorite Rocking Chair

The Rocking Chair on the porch of my grand parents house was something very special! Here’s the story how it ended up in my house:

This great rocking chair was part of the furniture in the family room and witnessed many years of happy family gatherings. The it got out of fashion and somebody relegated the rocking chair to the basement. Part of the reason for removing it from sight, was that one of the rockers was broken.

If I had found out it had been destroyed and thrown to the rubbish, it would have broken my heart. No one knows this rocking chair origins for sure, but family lore says it belonged to my Great Grandfather.

When I got it, it was covered with two mismatched blue cushions that were faded and one of it’s two runners was detached. It’s no La-Z-Boy recliner, but this rocking chair has always been a very comfortable place to sit and enjoy life, whichever room it occupied.

Restoring My Grandfather’s Rocking Chair

With a temporary fix in place on the rocker, I began to give it a facelift. I had a stroke of luck acquiring (for free!) a delightful piece of black textured vinyl. I cut it to fit each cushion, stitched up the sides, fit them with zippers, and squared off the corners to accommodate the depth of the foam.

The tricky part came next: the permanent repair on the rocker. I got the drill out and cleaned the broken dowels out of the holes in the rocker and in the legs. I sorted through my repository of things and pieces that might come in useful sometime and sure enough found a straight stick about 3/4 inch in diameter and with a knife I manufactured two new dowels about 3 inches long and big enough around to wedge tightly into the cleaned out holes. To make sure that the rockers would not fall off anymore, I added wood glue before assembling, then I sanded off the end of the dowels flush with the rocker.

I didn’t refinish or varnish the wood. It’s possible that a few of the visible scratches might have appeared at the early times of this rocking chair’s life, when my grandfather was a little boy rocking with his mother in this beautiful rocking chair.

Rocking Chair Summary

I inherited an old wooden rocking chair that my mom had kept in her bedroom to rock babies at night for many years. It later found it’s place in the family room to witness many more years of family gatherings, and was finally relegated to the basement. One of the rockers was broken, anyway, so I was given one last chance to claim it before it was hauled off to the donation. I managed to restore the rocking chair to it’s original beauty!
